Evening Breeze

These ravens were gliding or hovering in the evening breeze. I enjoyed standing here and watching them. Eventually they would land in the trees and then take off again and continue to play in the wind. Click on the image to see a larger version.

The Boathouses

I’ve wanted to photograph these boathouses ever since I first spotted them. I like the reflection of the boathouses in the water and because the interior is lit and the glass is semitransparent they remind me of a Japanese lantern. A long exposure took care of any ripples in the water. Click on the image to see a larger version.

In the Spirit of Brassaï

Brassaï was a Hungarian photographer who took pictures of Paris in the late 1920’s. He wandered the streets of Paris late at night and captured the essence of the city in his photographs. Making photographs in the dark bistros and darker streets presented a difficult technical problem. Brassai’s solution was direct, primitive, and perfect. He focused his small plate camera on a tripod, opened the shutter when ready, and fired a flashbulb. I have his book Brassai: Paris by Night and would recommend it to any photographer. Last night I was out taking some images in the spirit of Brassai. Click on the image to see a larger version.

The Blue Hour

Lots of traffic heading in and out of the downtown on a Saturday evening. In this long exposure you can see all three colours of the traffic light. A car coming towards me used the left hand turning lane at just the right moment. It’s a busy image, but I like the perspective which allows you to see the headlights and taillights on the bridge. Placed Upon The Horizon

I’ve been having fun taking images of the Facade 2015 event at the Vancouver Art Gallery. This projection mapping project transforms outdoor architecture. I tried to get a few different perspectives and in the process saw some rats scurrying away. My Nikon camera takes such beautiful images at night, with amazing detail and vivid colours. Peaceful

This image was taken after sunset, when everyone had left the beach. There wasn’t any wind and all you could hear was the calming sound of the surf. I think the silhouette image conveys a peacefulness. The exposure was about thirty seconds long and I needed to use a tripod to keep my camera absolutely still. Garibaldi Lake

I just returned from camping overnight at Garibaldi Lake. This allowed me to take images at sunset and sunrise, something you can’t do during a day hike. The 900 metres of elevation gain was quite challenging carrying a multi-day pack, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tripod, DSLR camera, lens, polarizer, remote shutter release, extra battery, down jacket, fleece pants, food, water, keys, wallet, Petzl headlamp, bug repellent, glasses and toilet paper. What many hikers on the trail incorrectly referred to as a ‘big bee’ were actually large horseflies which can give you a nasty bite.

There wasn’t any interesting cloud formations when I arrived, but the stillness of the water was good for reflections. Just after sunset a spectacular full moon rose behind the Sphinx glacier. I was up at 5:30 a.m. taking pictures along the shore of the lake and I had it all to myself. It was hard to leave such a beautiful place, I wish I could have stayed longer. Fireworks – Brazil

I wanted to find a different perspective for the fireworks this evening. This is not easy to do in a crowd of 300,000 people. I found this wooden sailing ship and I thought having it in the foreground and the fireworks in the background would create an interesting image. Much to my delight, when the fireworks started an individual climbed up the mast to get a better view, which only added to my photo. Click on the image to see a larger version.

Celebration of Light

In Vancouver in July and August fireworks take place for three nights at 10:00 p.m. over English Bay. This year the Celebration of Light has three countries performing China, Brazil and Canada. The first night was overcast and this resulted in a smaller than usual crowd of only 250,000 people. Last year, some evenings had 400,000 people taking in the fireworks. Below is a gallery of photos from China’s performance. Click on an image and then use the left and right arrows on your keyboard.
