Happy New Year

On the last day of 2015 I did some snowshoeing in the Coast Mountains. I witnessed a beautiful sunrise behind Mount Baker. Down in the valley there was some morning fog. I’d like to wish everyone a happy new year and all the best in 2016. Click on an image to see a larger version.

In the Spirit of Brassaï

Brassaï was a Hungarian photographer who took pictures of Paris in the late 1920’s. He wandered the streets of Paris late at night and captured the essence of the city in his photographs. Making photographs in the dark bistros and darker streets presented a difficult technical problem. Brassai’s solution was direct, primitive, and perfect. He focused his small plate camera on a tripod, opened the shutter when ready, and fired a flashbulb. I have his book Brassai: Paris by Night and would recommend it to any photographer. Last night I was out taking some images in the spirit of Brassai. Click on the image to see a larger version.

Life Finds A Way # 1

This morning I woke up and didn’t hear any rain hitting the roof, so I decided to spend some time outside exploring with my camera. I thought the combination of the old wharf and the cloudy sky would look good in black and white. Click on the image to see a larger version.

The Parkade

It’s that time of year when we experience many days of rain. Sometimes it falls as drizzle or a shower and at other times it’s a downpour. I went shopping for groceries early this morning and took this picture in the empty parkade. I like the composition and how you can see all the cement pillars. The tire tracks at the bottom of the image conveys a human presence. Who was driving the car? What were they doing here? Where are they now? Click on the image to see a larger version.

Along the Fraser River

It was a beautiful cold clear day and the weather forecast called for early morning fog in low lying areas. I set up my camera and waited for the fog to slowly clear. I like this image of the trees in the foreground and the sun hitting the bridge at sunrise. Click on the image to see a larger version.
